The reversal in fortunes of gaming’s two biggest football franchises is a fascinating study of urgency versus complacency, of one developer embracing the new generation and of the other being stuck firmly in the past. FIFA has undoubtedly taken the mantle of the classiest representation of the beautiful game, building from scratch to take advantage of modern hardware. PES, meanwhile, is still running on a hopelessly outdated engine, creaking under the burden of time and fierce competition.
Interestingly enough, however, the role-switching goes beyond perceived quality. During the PS2 era, PES was the connoisseurs’ choice, held high as the most realistic football sim ever made. FIFA, on the other hand, was for the proles. Cheap arcade thrills disguised by having the real kits and pretty presentation. While PES will never be able to compete with EA’s licensing – still having to call several teams like Tottenham ‘North London Whites’ – the thrust of each experience has been reversed. Now FIFA is the accurate simulation and PES is its zippy arcade equivalent. This will no doubt disappoint PES purists but – whether by accident or design – this switcheroo could be what saves the ailing series.
