The Lego series of video games has received a mixed critical reception lately. A lot of reviewers continually praise the franchise for its infectious sense of fun, easy pick-up-and-play controls and sparkling personality. These are all well deserved accolades, but equally deserved, is the growing chorus of complaints from a lot of critics that the series has begun to coast on its assets, and that Traveller’s Tales has basically gotten away with making the same game over and over again. This is somewhat true; leaving aside the odd couple of kinks, the core gameplay of the Lego Star Wars, Batman and Indiana Jones games is basically the same. There are exceptions to this rule, such as Lego Battles, which was released for the Nintendo DS and the forthcoming Lego Rock Band, but on the whole players know what to expect from a Lego video game – particularly one based around LucasArts’ intellectual property.
