U.S. stocks traded higher Monday, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 45 points to 10437, the S&P 500 increased 5 points to 1110 and the Nasdaq Composite grew 6 points to 2200. Among the companies whose shares are actively trading in the session are Nvidia Corp. (NVDA), Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) and Somaxon Pharmaceuticals Inc. (SOMX).
Nvidia ($16.43, +$2.17, +15.22%) and Advanced Micro Devices ($8.54, +$0.68, +8.63%) rose after Intel Corp.’s (INTC, $20.45, -$0.01, -0.05%) plans to move into a new semiconductor market suffered a setback, as the company disclosed it is canceling the first chip based on a novel design dubbed Larrabee. The high-profile product, which Intel has been publicly discussing since April 2007, was expected to generate complex graphics for videogames and carry out other high-peformance computing chores. The technology had threatened to open a new front in Intel’s competition with Nvidia and AMD.
