Motorola Inc. and Aruba Networks, a Silicon Valley wireless network company, have settled a patent dispute more than two years after the Schaumburg-based technology giant sued its competitor over technology related to wireless computer networks.

Motorola, along with subsidiaries Symbol Technologies and Wireless Valley Communications, filed its patent infringement lawsuit against Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Aruba in August 2007. Aruba filed a countersuit in September 2008.

On Friday, the two companies said they’ve settled all outstanding intellectual property disputes and reached an agreement on cross-licensing.

Gene Delaney, president of Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility Solutions business, said in a statement that the two companies are also “actively exploring technical and business opportunities of mutual interest.”

Friday also marks an important day for Motorola’s mobile devices business. The Droid, a highly anticipated smartphone by Motorola that uses the newest version of Google’s Android operating software, went on sale at Verizon Wireless earlier this morning. The Droid is one of two Android phones that Motorola introduced for the holiday season, and the industry is closely watching Droid sales to see if the device can compete with Apple’s iPhone.

Motorola’s shares were down 3.4 percent to $8.99 in mid-morning trading Friday. The stock has doubled this year and has climbed steadily over the last week in anticipation of the Droid’s release.
