Left 4 Dead 2 puts players back in the apocalypse with more guns, more maps, more special infected and most important of all, more zombies.
I am now able to kill a man with a frying pan. It’s not the sort of skill you expect to learn in journalism, and certainly not in video games journalism, but after attending the second Left 4 Dead 2 preview event this year, I can now turn an everyday cooking item into a lethal weapon. This is largely thanks to the pair of military instructors hired by Brando PR as scene-setters for the Left 4 Dead 2 demo. According to them, a common mistake in wielding a frying pan, is aiming a blow to an opponent’s forehead. A slam to the side of the head is far more effective, and if you can remember to bellow into the face of your attacker, so much the better; in the unlikely event you don’t knock them out, they may think you’re mad and run away.
I’m not sure if the protagonists of Left 4 Dead 2 have had similar training in the deadly art of kitchen utensils, but if the demo levels are anything to go by, they do the job well enough. Mêlée weapons are only one of the new items of death players will able to get their hands on in Valve’s latest zombie apocalypse shooter, but they’re far more satisfying than you’d think. In the two levels of The Parish chapter that I was shown – which are also currently available as a free download on Xbox Live – there were, unfortunately, no signs of the much touted chainsaws from the L4D2 trailer. However, I was able to put my new found lethal frying pan prowess to good use with a couple of skillets, as well as use a discard guitar to decapitate some attacking zombies. Both do the job well enough, even if wielding them does mean your character discards its handgun (with endless ammunition). There was also a nightstick available, but it’s hard to discard the guitar for it, because it makes such a satisfying ‘twang’ when used.
