Guitar Hero: Van Halen offers a bastardized version of the band, a set list that seems almost random, and a limp, derivative experience. It was free if you bought Guitar Hero 5, but if you want to pay full price it’s available in stores now. Save your money.
Guitar Hero: Van Halen was rumored long before the game became fact, and the promise of the title was, sadly, the high point of the game’s existence. It was shown at E3, although the kiosks with the game were devoid of players. It was given away with copies of Guitar Hero 5, which shows the level of confidence Activision had in the product. Can anyone honestly name all the fake-guitar games released this year without looking at a list? Do you feel like you need another one?

The song list itself is odd. Van Halen songs and solos only make up about half of the track list. The rest of the songs feature Weezer, Third Eye Blind, Tenacious D, Blink 182… it’s like Activision Blizzard went through past games and slapped in songs by any band that featured a guitar and a contract signed for a past Guitar Hero title.
