RALEIGH, N.C. — The Canadian company that makes the BlackBerry mobile phone plans to open a North Carolina research-and-development hub.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday that Research In Motion Ltd. confirmed plans to open the office in the Research Triangle Park area.

Company spokeswoman Jamie Ernst said the new office is in the planning stages. Details on the location, opening date or number of people to be hired aren’t yet available.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company held a two-day job fair in the Raleigh area last month and has already started hiring some of the thousands of local high-tech workers laid off in the past two years.

Research In Motion also has offices in Texas, California, Florida and Illinois.
