In a bad economic year and near record unemployment in most states, retailers are still hoping that shoppers come out for Black Friday. Black Friday the day after Thanksgiving and more recently Cyber Monday the Monday after Thanksgiving has been one of the largest shopping days of the year. Retailers are hoping to recoup many of their losses due to the sagging economy and as a result consumer spending. Some retailers have begun to leak Black Friday ads to generate buzz.

Retailers also have to contend with a psychological shift in the American psyche from one of buy now and pay later to one of save, look for the best deal and then buy. The banking and real estate crisis among other things awakened Americans to the notion of not living beyond the means. Consumers are coming down from a decade of retail therapy, credit card debt, and low wages. This year retailers have to be on their game to get shoppers in the stores. Store credit card give aways of the like may not fly this year.
